Beach Waves Are SCARY, Sand Castles Are AMAZING, and My Knee Hurts

Dear Diary,

I have had A WEEK. A full, chaotic, emotional, sandy, and slightly painful week. Let me tell you everything.

🌊 The Beach: A Place of Absolute Terror

So. Baba and Mama took me to the beach. Sounds fun, right? WRONG. Or at least — partly wrong.

We get there and I see the waves. THE WAVES, DIARY. They were TALL. Like, taller than Baba. And Baba is VERY tall. One of those waves looked at me personally and I made the only logical decision available to a person of my size and intelligence:

I screamed. Loudly. Dramatically. Correctly.

The beach trip plan? Gone. Dissolved. Washed away — just like those terrifying waves would have washed away ME if I had gone anywhere near them. I regret nothing.

Apparently, according to people who study toddler brains (which are, by the way, incredible), it is completely normal for kids my age to be scared of big waves. Something about the noise, the unpredictability, and the sheer SIZE of them triggers a totally reasonable fear response. Parents.com explains that fear of large, loud, unpredictable things is super common in toddlers. So I wasn’t being dramatic. I was being developmentally appropriate. Put that on a t-shirt.

🏖️ The Sand Court: My Creative Empire

BUT — and this is important — I did NOT let the wave situation ruin my sand dreams. No no no. A genius adapts.

We found a sand court. A beautiful, wave-free, perfectly calm sand court. And that is where I built my EMPIRE.

  • 🐋 A whale. A majestic, chunky whale.
  • 🐻 A bear. Fierce. Powerful. A little lumpy but still iconic.
  • 🏰 A castle wall. For protection. From waves. Obviously.
  • 🪣 Giant buckets of sand. Because more is more.

Did any of these look exactly like what they were supposed to be? That is not the point. The point is that I made them, and they were MAGNIFICENT, and sand play is genuinely one of the best things in the whole world.

Sand play is actually really good for kids like me! It helps with creativity, fine motor skills, and imaginative thinking. NAEYC notes that sand and water play supports sensory development and problem-solving in early childhood. So basically I was doing brain homework. Voluntarily. You’re welcome, Baba and Mama.

⚽ The Hotel Ball Pit and a VERY Interesting Overheard Conversation

At the hotel, there was a ball pit. A BALL PIT, DIARY. I jumped in immediately and stayed there for what felt like a reasonable amount of time (Mama’s face suggested it was perhaps longer than that).

And THEN — oh, this is the good part — I heard Baba and Mama talking quietly to each other. They thought I wasn’t listening. Classic adult mistake. I am ALWAYS listening.

They were talking about buying me a ball pit. Like the one at the play area. FOR OUR HOME.

I pretended not to hear. I played it very cool. I splashed in the balls and acted like a normal toddler. Inside, though? Inside I was doing a full victory dance.

Baba, Mama — I know. I heard everything. And I want it noted officially, in this diary, that I would like this for Christmas. I am putting it in writing. This is legally binding.

🚲 The Bicycle Parking Situation (A National Tragedy)

When we got home, Baba tried to park the bicycle at the nearby parking garages. Every single one. Said no. To the bicycle. Just like that.

This is a disaster I don’t fully understand but I could feel Baba’s sadness and I shared it. The bicycle now lives in the stairwell, which seems very undignified for a bicycle.

I don’t have much to add here. I just think it’s wrong. The bicycle did nothing wrong. End of statement.

🛝 The Park, The Slide, and The Great Fall of 2026

Today I went to school, came home, and Baba took me to the park. We were having the BEST time at the slide. I was going fast. I was going again. Life was perfect.

Then Mama called. Time to go home.

I ran. I ran very fast because I am a fast runner. And then — gravity happened. I fell. My knee scraped the ground and it was NOT okay. Ow. OW. OW.

Baba did all the right things — rinsed it with water and cleaned it with salt water. It still hurt a lot tonight. My poor little knee. 😢

Minor scrapes and falls are apparently very normal at my age since I’m running everywhere and my coordination is still catching up to my ambitions. HealthyChildren.org recommends cleaning wounds with water and saline, which is exactly what Baba did. So Baba did good. Baba gets a gold star. But my knee still hurts.

I am going to sleep now and hoping very hard that tomorrow my knee feels better. And also that the ball pit is already ordered.

Priorities.
