Sudo Turns 3: Broken Glasses, Birthday Chaos, and a Bike Crash That Changed My Life

Section 1: The Officially-Three-Years-Old Birthday Disaster Party

Ladies and gentlemen, it is OFFICIAL. I, Sudo, am now THREE YEARS OLD. That’s basically a grown-up. I can count things. I can say long sentences. I can negotiate bedtime like a tiny lawyer. The world is NOT ready for three-year-old Sudo.

Sudo diary section 1

Last Friday, my whole family went to Grandma’s house (that’s “nhà nội” for those keeping score) to celebrate MY big day. We’re talking chè, xôi — the whole traditional Vietnamese birthday spread. Very fancy. Very important. Very much about ME.

Sudo diary section 2

But here’s the thing about my birthday celebration: it was CURSED.

  • First, I broke a glass of water. Look, it slipped. My hands are small. Physics is not on my side. I’m THREE, not a circus performer.
  • Then Mama cut her hand while scraping coconut for the chè.
  • Then Grandma ALSO cut her hand doing the same thing.

So basically, my birthday turned into a medical emergency. The coconut was fighting back. But you know what? Everyone survived. Band-aids were applied. The chè was DELICIOUS. And most importantly — I got a TON of gifts and lì xì (lucky money envelopes). HEHE. 💰

Baba says he’s going to use my birthday money to buy me a BICYCLE. Excuse me? New adventures? Open road? Wind in my pigtails? YES PLEASE. Sudo on wheels is about to be the most dangerous thing this neighborhood has ever seen.

Oh, and here’s the part that makes me a LITTLE salty. Friday was also the day my school threw a birthday party for all the May babies. And guess who couldn’t go because she was at Grandma’s house celebrating? THIS GIRL. I have literally NEVER gotten to celebrate my birthday with my classmates. Not once. Not a single year of my three entire years on this planet. The injustice! I’m hoping next year the school picks a different day. Or maybe I’ll just write them a strongly worded letter. I know at least 12 words now. That should be enough.

Section 2: The Great Staircase Jumping Incident (AKA The Day Baba Proved His Point)

TODAY, Baba took me to the park. And at first? It was GLORIOUS. Running around. Jumping. Giggling. Living my best three-year-old life. The park is basically my kingdom, and everyone there is just visiting.

But then it was time to go home. And there were STAIRS. Beautiful, wonderful, bounce-able stairs. So instead of walking up them like a boring normal person, I decided to HOP. Jump up, jump down, one step at a time. Boing. Boing. Boing. It was art.

Baba said, “Sudo, don’t jump. You’ll fall.”

I heard him. I understood him. I chose to ignore him. (I understand the word “no.” I just don’t believe in it.)

So what did Baba do? He DEMONSTRATED. He let my tiny little bicycle roll right down the stairs. Multiple flips. My water bottle FLEW out and hit the ground. The bike tumbled like it was auditioning for an action movie. It was horrifying. It was dramatic. It was… very effective.

I cried. I cried A LOT. “HUHUHU I PROMISE I WON’T JUMP ANYMORE!” Tears everywhere. Snot situation: critical. Mama had to come in for emergency cuddles.

After exactly 10 minutes of crying (I timed it with my feelings), I was totally fine. Back to playing with Baba like nothing happened. 😆 Because that’s how I roll. Literally — I almost rolled down those stairs, but that’s beside the point.

Turning three is wild, you guys. According to Children’s Hospital of Orange County, three-year-olds are hitting all kinds of developmental milestones — running, climbing, using longer sentences, and understanding emotions better. And honestly? I’m nailing ALL of it. The running? Check. The climbing and jumping? Maybe too much check. The emotions? Oh, I’ve got emotions for DAYS. I went from devastated to perfectly happy in 10 minutes flat. That’s emotional RANGE, people.

As New Horizon Academy notes, three-year-olds are learning to express themselves with more words and longer sentences. And let me tell you — “I PROMISE I WON’T JUMP ANYMORE” is a VERY long sentence when you’re sobbing through every word.

Anyway. I’m three now. I’ve survived a cursed birthday, a coconut attack on my family, a bike crash demonstration, and the emotional betrayal of missing my school party. If this is what Year Three is like, buckle up, world.

Sudo out. 🎂🚲
